Acupuncture and Psychotherapy: Wellness Synergy

I am thrilled to be now offering community acupuncture at Wild Tree Psychotherapy on a monthly basis, 2nd Monday of the month from 10:00am-12:00pm. I believe strongly in the many benefits of psychotherapy, and I recommend it for many of my patients. The great thing about being able to offer acupuncture to Wild Tree clients is that acupuncture works synergistically with therapy. While therapy can help to unravel deep, ingrained mental habits, acupuncture can help to unravel ingrained body habits at the physiological level. Acupuncture does this by regulating the nervous system and improving the flow of energy throughout the body.

The most common symptoms that I see in my clinic that accompany mental stress or anxiety are insomnia, indigestion, poor energy, and headaches. These symptoms can be caused by the body being stuck in sympathetic mode, sometimes known as “fight-or-flight” mode. If your body is stuck in this mode, it is probably a totally normal response to modern life! As a fast-paced society, we are working long hours with little time for rest and recovery. Many of my patients are dealing with the mental and physical demands of long work hours, often considering working only 9-5 to be a luxury. To help move the body out of fight-or-flight mode, acupuncture puts the body’s sympathetic response on pause.

An acupuncture treatment transitions to the body toward parasympathetic mode, sometimes referred to as, “rest and digest.” I find that patients often sleep through treatments and feel refreshed and well-rested at the end of the treatment. It is in this more calm parasympathetic mode that our bodies do their best healing. By helping to balance the nervous system, we can decrease anxiety and depression and improve sleep, energy and digestion. Combing therapy with acupuncture is a powerful opportunity to restore this balance and bring increased positive energy to our lives, every day.
